Body Paragraphs and Word Choice

10/25/2010

We will now start working on the body of our essays, starting with the first body paragraph.
Using your organizer add the Es to the first section. See how I added to the organizer below.
Picture
This is the rough draft paragraph that resulted from my Es on RDF #1.

One important reason for doing homework in my room is that I need room to spread out. Sometimes I am using three books at the same time for one homework assignment. I need the textbook for the problems, my spiral for notes, and a dictionary to look up words in my spiral and textbook. I spread these books across my bed and move back and forth from my desk.

This is an OK rough draft paragraph, but it is boring. It needs details. You may add similes, hyperbole, or metaphors, also use good description to really bring your paragraph to life.

So that I may take all the space that I need for my work, it is important that I do my homework in my room. I will sometimes a library worth of books at the same time because I need to look up the words my teacher used in class. She is so incomprehensible sometimes that I feel like a cat in dog training. The books spread across my bed like a bird's wing with only the slightest overlap so that I might read all of them.

Introductory Paragraph

10/18/2010

Introductory Paragraph: First paragraph of an essay that lays out your plan for writing.

Outline for Essay and Introductory Paragraph
Picture
The sections in orange are for the body (later paragraphs) of your essay.

Order for Introductory Paragraph
First Sentences: Topic Sentence, followed by elaboration or explanation of the topic
Next: RDF's (One sentence for each or combine in one sentence)
Final: What are you going to show us

Example
The best place to do homework is large, flat, and clean. Homework takes a lot of space, and I need room to spread out. This is why I do my homework in my room. There is enough room for all my stuff, it is quiet, and I can close the door.

Topic sentence rewritten with an occasion/position statement (check the writing cheat sheet).
When I need to do homework, I go for an area that is large, flat, and clean.
